Tsunami Advisory Update

A Tsunami Advisory is now in effect for coastal areas from the California/Mexico border to the BC/Alaska border, including California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

There will be areas of impact along the Central Coast including Monterey County Estimated arrival time for the central coast is 12:15 AM, Wednesday morning. This may impact low-lying areas along the central coastline, and coastal flooding is possible.

If you're in these coastal zones:
Stay off beaches, strong currents and dangerous waves are expected Avoid harbors and marinas which will also experience dangerous water conditions
This advisory means strong currents or dangerous waves are expected. Widespread flooding is not expected, but multiple hazardous waves can last for hours. The first wave is not always the largest.

This follows a Magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck at 4:25 PM PDT, 80 miles SE of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is not issuing any evacuation warnings or orders currently. We will continue to monitor this situation and update, as necessary. Anyone living on a vessel in any Monterey County harbors should contact their harbormaster for guidance. Evacuation Orders and Warnings

Message from Alert Monterey County:
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is issuing an evacuation warning to all persons living aboard vessels in the Moss Landing area. We are recommending that these individuals seek other lodging arrangements for the duration of the tsunami advisory for California Coastal counties.

This message applies to Monterey County Zones: MRY-B040, MRY-B050

A tsunami is expected to reach the Monterey County coastline at 12:15 AM on July 30, 2025.

A series of strong tsunami waves and dangerous currents may affect the coastline. Residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water and away from beaches and harbors until local officials declare it safe to return.
