Soil sampling took place between May 8 & June 20, 2025, at 27 locations in Moss Landing & surrounding North Monterey County, resulting in 108 individual samples. Analyses included metals associated with battery fires as well as well as combustion byproducts. Report posted September 22,2025

Yellowish or brownish smoke can occur during turbine start-ups at the facility. When turbines start, emissions are temporarily higher than during steady operation—similar to starting a car engine. This is a normal, permitted part of facility operations.

This testing is a continuation of the County-led Community Sampling Plan in response to the January 2025 fire at the Vistra Battery Storage location. Phase 2 shifts to marshes as these are ecologically sensitive areas that may have been impacted differently by the fire.

On July 08, 2025, the County received a revised report from Cornerstone Earth Group—Data Review for Moss Landing Vistra Battery Fire—which more effectively evaluates whether current environmental data is sufficient for a Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) and identifies remaining data gaps.
